Storm Chances and an End to the Heat

Hot weather will linger into Monday, with another heat advisory in effect from 1-8PM. Heat indices will yet again exceed 100 degrees (see images below).

We’re watching for the possibility of storms this evening in northern and eastern Iowa, but central Iowa’s best storm chance comes Monday. Cooler air pushing in from the north behind a cold front will kick off storms in the afternoon and evening, and some in central and eastern Iowa could produce strong winds. Some of these storms will linger into the early morning hours on Tuesday in southern Iowa (see graphics below).

Short-range computer models are indicating that some of Monday’s late-day storms (below) may feature rotating updrafts, which heightens the chance of severe weather. In the second image, Colorado State’s severe weather algorithm gives us quiet weather beyond Tuesday and into next weekend.

Rainfall totals tonight through Tuesday will be heaviest in the eastern part of the state.
