Caitlin Clark was watching the ESPYs on her couch, alone, when host Serena Williams fired off a joke poking fun at her being well liked by 'white people'.

The Indiana Fever star responded to the tennis legend's jab, not angry with being put down while in the spotlight.

'Caitlin Clark had an amazing year and is nominated for three awards,' Williams said as part of her opening monologue . 'You are the Larry Bird in that you are an amazing player, you have ties to Indiana, and white people are really crazy about you.'

The joke did provoke laughter from the crowd, who loudly cheered Williams name-dropping Clark before the punchline.

Clark won in all three categories in which she was nominated, upping her lifetime ESPY total to five to go alongside the two awards she won last year.

Williams said the joke as the host for last week's ESPY Awards, celebrating the best in sports

'Yeah I was watching it live. I was just sitting on my couch by myself,' Clark said. 'Something that really stood out to me was like how much women’s basketball was a part of the show I think it shows where women’s basketball is going and obviously women’s athletics in general.'

'Obviously Serena did a tremendous job hosting,' Clark continued. 'I think it just shows the excitement around the game and how many people watch and pay attention.'

For the second consecutive year, Clark won for best 'Female College Athlete', while also taking home the overall 'Female Athlete' award this year.

The Fever star also became the first female to win the 'Record-Breaking Performance' award at the ESPYs, a fact she learned from her younger brother that Clark was shocked by.

'It probably shouldn’t have been the first woman to win that award,' Clark said. '... How did Serena Williams never win that award?'

Clark continues to impress in her rookie season in the WNBA. On Sunday, she an integral in the Fever's victory over the Minnesota Lynx with 17 points.
