Opinions vary on exactly where Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert ranks among his peers. Some people believe that he is an elite option, making the most of some difficult situations.

Others believe that he is overrated. For all the records and production he has through four seasons, it has not resulted in success in the postseason.

In his career, the Chargers have made the postseason only once. It was in the 2022 season and the team had a historic collapse against the Jacksonville Jaguars, losing 31-30 despite leading 27-0 in the first half.

Wins and losses may only count toward a quarterback, but it takes a team effort to win games. That is something Justin Herbert is the epitome of.

In a statistic shared by Scott Kacsmar of 365 Scores , Justin Herbert is better in late-game situations than you would think. Out of the 13 games that he started in 2023, there were three instances he led a late comeback only to see the Chargers’ defense blow the game.

The Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers all accomplished that feat. In his career, Justin Herbert has lost four comebacks, surpassing players he is compared to such as Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts.

Digging a little deeper, Kacsmar shared another eye-popping statistic. “Herbert has 7 games with go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter and overtime that still resulted in a loss, or as many as Burrow (3), Tua (3), and Hurts (1) combined,” he wrote.

Quarterbacks are judged on wins and losses. No matter how fair you believe that to be, that is just how it goes.

For Justin Herbert, that leaves some people having a skewed perception of his performance. Had just one or two of those thwarted comeback attempts resulted in victories, the Chargers could have had one more playoff appearance in his career.

One more playoff appearance, or a better seed, could have changed how things turned out for the team in the postseason. Not even Justin Herbert’s heroics were able to overcome the ineptitude of Brandon Staley, who has a defensive background, as head coach.
