Jon Heyman on Cubs: 'They've got to be buyers'

(670 The Score) At the tail end of a disappointing first half of the regular season, the Cubs were in need of a strong finish before the All-Star break.

They accomplished just that, going 5-2 on a tough road trip in Baltimore and St. Louis. That included the Cubs earning a three-game sweep of the Orioles.

With the trade deadline looming on July 30, Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network believes the Cubs are now positioned to be a buyer rather than a seller, as he told the Mully & Haugh Show on Monday morning.

“They better be non-sellers,” Heyman said. “They've got to be buyers at this point. I mean, they are the Cubs. They are the third-biggest market. They have the revenue, it’s high. We talk about this a lot. They’re in the race. I know they haven’t been great this year, but they showed something at the end. They beat up on the Orioles.

“Good for them. They are much better than they’ve shown over the first half. I do believe they should be buyers.”

Heyman believes the Cubs will pursue a catcher on the trade market, pointing to the Rockies' Elias Diaz and Blue Jays' Danny Jansen as options.

The Cubs earned an 8-3 win over the Cardinals on Sunday to give them seven victories in their last 10 games. They sit at 47-51 and in last place in the NL Central at the All-Star break, 8.5 games back of the division-leading Brewers.

The Cubs are 3.5 games back of the last NL wild-card spot while operating in a group of nine contenders for three slots.

The Cubs return to action Friday, when they host the Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
