The View Debates, in Trump Shooting Aftermath: Is it ‘Even Possible’ to ‘Lower the Temperature?’

The hosts of The View asked on Monday whether lowering the “temperature” of political divides is even “possible” after an attempted assassination attempt on Donald Trump over the weekend.

The hosts of The View have long been in agreement that the former president is a “threat” to democracy, including his former White House staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin , but they focused the first segment of their show on Monday on Trump and President Joe Biden’s calls for unity following the shooting.

During a Pennsylvania rally, Trump was struck in the ear by a shooter identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks . Another rally goer was fatally shot and two others injured in the shooting. Crooks was killed by Secret Service.

“They’re both trying to lower the temperature. Is that even possible?” Joy Behar asked, referring to Biden’s statement on the Trump shooting.

Griffin recommended people “check” how they engage in politics and declared, “If you care about democracy, listen more, say less.”

“One thing that is fundamentally American is the right to criticize policies. It is also our right to criticize the character of our politicians, but the way in which we do it matters and we live in an era where escalatory rhetoric and saying the most damning and the most inciting thing oftentimes is what’s rewarded,” Griffin argued.

Sara Haines said the shooting felt like something out of a different “time” as most people have only read about political assassinations on presidents.

Ana Navarro said she is “happy” Trump is okay and said she felt the same watching the assassination attempt as she did watching the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“I was shocked and I was heartbroken because I fled political violence in Nicaragua and to me, this is something that is not supposed to happen in America,” Navarro said.
