Adam Schefter Makes Bold Prediction About the Future Of NFL Schedule, Says, 'It's Only A Matter Of Time'

Last week on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow gave his thoughts on what an 18-game schedule could look like in the NFL. Burrow suggested that the league could have two bye weeks for every team, with the entire league getting a bye week in Week 13 when the Pro Bowl would be held.
Not everybody seemed to be on board with Burrow’s plan, as NFL players have given their thoughts over time about the increase in schedule.
An 18-game schedule, obviously, adds yet another game to what is already a grueling season. The NFL just moved from 16 to 17 games in 2021.
While on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, NFL reporter Adam Schefter was asked whether an 18-game schedule was likely to happen any time soon.
"And now, the fact that Joe Burrow is even talking about the 18 games, to me, it just seems like there is momentum to this," Schefter said. "I don't think it's real right now, but it's only a matter of time before it does get real and we get to that point -- and again, when you get back to the 18 games, in my mind, it's going to be about money."
The financials of this will play a huge part in this movement, Schefter believes. He says the NFL will have to incentivize the players with enough money to make the new schedule "worth their while."
The idea of this lengthy schedule goes as far back as 2010 when the league proposed a larger schedule. The plan proposed then was to eliminate two preseason games in exchange for two regular-season games. A decade later, the new CBA implemented the extra regular-season game, plus an expanded playoff field.
The expiration of the current CBA isn't until after the 2030 season, meaning there's a lot that would have to go right before the league could institute a schedule change. That would start with a proposal from league owners to the NFL, who would then move on into negotiations with the NFLPA on a new CBA.
