NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Triple-digit heat occurred this weekend in parts of the region with more of that possible in the short term, but with more Monsoonal moisture inbound, conditions will gradually change ahead.

After a few showers dissipated around Durango, The Jemez Mountains, and The Sangre de Cristo Mountains earlier this morning, mostly clear skies are still present across most of the region, except in the aforementioned areas where rain activity is starting to blossom once again. From The Northern Mountains to the northern valley communities, it was a seasonably mild start as temperatures started off in the 50’s and 60’s, while everywhere else was starting off in the 70’s. Conditions are a little bit humid in The Four Corners and even more humid in The Pecos River Valley, but most are starting off relatively dry as temperatures continue to rise.

    Forecast Continues Below

A high pressure system will remain strong to The Northwest as despite some moisture that will creep in from the south up into The Sacramento Mountains and into the northern third of the region, stagnant-enough air, combining with southerly surface winds, albeit light, will allow for temperatures to continue to rise throughout this afternoon. Air quality, particularly around The Metro, will be relatively poor as a result with the sunburn risk being very high for all before more storms to the north start to form with only a few storms forming right now. The widespread storms in Southern Colorado will be faster-moving to the east, some storms will be slow-moving in northern parts of The Land of Enchantment, and there will be the slight possibility of a few storms drifting south to the northern parts of The Rio Grande Valley, while a few storms near Ruidoso will drift to the southeast. The flash flooding risk will be generally low today, but a little more likely than yesterday with even more of a likelihood later this week.

More unsettled weather later this week will come in the form of the weakening high pressure drifting to the southwest, allowing for more tropical moisture in the atmosphere to generally produce more thunderstorms, lower high temperatures eventually, and stronger winds.
