GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A girl who survived cancer is now giving back to other kids and their families who are going through what she and her family did.

28/22 News reporter Iyee Jagne takes us to Greenfield Township, Lackawanna County to meet this week’s Here’s To You Kid.

11-year-old Lakeland School District student Gia Grier has been helping raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for seven years.

She started at the tender age of three years old. Her motivation comes from a personal battle with the illness the foundation benefits.

“I had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [I want] to benefit Alex’s lemonade stand foundation which is a foundation to raise funds for safer and new treatments for pediatric cancer,” said Grier.

She knows the challenges of dealing with cancer and wants to do her best to make sure no child has to face the same struggles.

“I know first hand because I did have cancer. I know how terrible it is and that no child should have to go through it,” expressed Grier.

“We raised a little almost around five thousand dollars,” stated Grier.

She says the best part of doing this, aside from helping the families, is seeing people’s faces who come to the lemonade stand and learn what their cool glass of lemonade benefits.

“My favorite part is maybe serving the people,” said Grier.

Gia also plays ukulele! She is also involved in cheer, dance and basketball at school. Here’s to you Gia!

Gia says when she grows up she wants to be an author.
