DETROIT, MI – Get ready, Michigan! A cold front is sweeping through the state, bringing with it a mix of showers, thunderstorms, and a welcome break from the summer heat.
By mid-week, high pressure will move into the area, bringing cooler and less humid conditions. Nighttime lows will drop into the lower to mid-50s, which is 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. Daytime temperatures will be more comfortable, with heat indices in the 70s.
Storms in the North
This morning, a line of thunderstorms moved across Northern Lower Michigan, from Manistee to Alpena. These storms, associated with a deep axis of moisture and an organizing cold front, are expected to stay north of Southeast Michigan. However, areas south of I-69 will experience strong static stability, reducing the chances of severe weather.
Afternoon Thunderstorms Possible
Later today, a weak low-pressure system will move across Southern Lower Michigan, potentially eroding some of the lower-level stability. This could lead to isolated thunderstorms in the northern parts of the state, especially around Saginaw Bay. While the chances of severe weather are low, the NWS warns that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible in the northern Thumb area.
Cooler Air Settles In
Tonight, north winds and nocturnal cooling will usher in a cooler air mass across the region. By Wednesday, expect much cooler temperatures and some additional showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon. Dewpoints will remain in the lower 60s on Wednesday before dropping into the 50s by Thursday, making for a more comfortable end to the week.
Looking Ahead
The highlight of the late-week forecast is the cooler and more comfortable weather. Daytime heat indices will stay in the 70s, and nighttime lows will be refreshingly cool, dipping into the lower to mid-50s. This cooler trend will last through at least the first half of the upcoming weekend.
Marine Forecast
Mariners should be cautious as an organized thunderstorm complex moves through the area this morning. Although the storms will exit into Ontario by mid-morning, gusty winds may continue, potentially necessitating a Small Craft Advisory. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected this afternoon and evening as the cold front moves southeast. Once the front passes, cooler northwest winds will prevail, bringing quieter weather for the end of the week.
Stay tuned to local weather updates and prepare for a week of changing conditions. Whether you're enjoying the rain or welcoming the cooler temperatures, Michigan's weather is always an adventure!
