STEVENS POINT – Portage County Public Library announced Monday the hiring of Alexander Johnson as library director to replace Larry Oathout, who will retire effective Sept. 6.

Oathout has served in the role since 2016.

“Portage County Public Library is thrilled that Alexander will be joining the PCPL team,” Liz Peterson, library board president, said in a news release. “Alexander brings a variety of library experiences with him that will serve Portage County well.”

Johnson has worked with Marathon County Public Library since 2021 as library support services manager where he supervised technical and circulation staff and the passport application acceptance. He has experience on the library’s Strategic Plan Leadership Team and served on committees of the Wisconsin Valley Library Service.

Johnson described his role at Marathon County Public Library as, “ensuring that each patron gets the most the library can offer, regardless of their circumstances and inspiring staff and peers to fulfill the potential of the library's ideal.”

Before moving to Marathon County, Johnson worked for King County Public Library in Washington in a public service role.

“The library board and staff were impressed with Alexander's passion for making certain libraries are for everyone and using the Wisconsin Idea as a guide for offering patrons the best possible library services,” Peterson said. “We're all excited to see his leadership in action.”
