Teoscar Hernandez HR Derby winnings nearly outpaces entire A's payroll

Teoscar Hernandez's Home Run Derby win came with the cachet of being the Home Run Derby champion, and the notoriety of being the first ever Dodger to win the competition. It also came with a $1 million check.

That prize money is relatively paltry in comparison to Hernandez's 2024 contract. His one-year deal with the Dodgers is worth $23.5 million, although he'll see $15 million of that this year with deferred payments beginning in 2030. He's up over $45.5 million in career earnings per Spotrac.

While the $1 million isn't necessarily a major splash in the bucket for Hernandez, it outpaces almost the entire Oakland A's active roster.

Only four players on the A's 26-man roster are making more than $1 million this year, including Seth Brown ($2.6 million), Scott Alexander ($2.25 million), Miguel Andujar ($1.7 million) and TJ McFarland ($1.5 million).

The other 22 are making $800,000 or less, bringing them in under Hernandez's prize money for winning the Home Run Derby.

A's ownership and their various surrogates have indicated the team's payroll will increase once their move to Las Vegas is complete, but for now the HR Derby winner will be richer for slugging a some home runs over a few hours than most of the A's roster will be for playing an entire MLB season.
