The San Francisco 49ers thought they had their franchise quarterback when they selected Trey Lance No. 3 overall in 2021. Instead, it was Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, in 2022, who came to the rescue.
With Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffering injuries during the 2022 season, it was Brock Purdy thrust into the starting lineup near the end of the season. He ended up going 5-0 as a starter, not suffering his first loss until the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury in that game, which was the major reason for the 49ers losing. He rehabbed all throughout the offseason, getting healthy enough to be in the lineup in Week 1 of the 2023 season.
It was like he was never gone. He picked up right where he left off, leading the 49ers to victory in their first five games of the season.
There was a rough patch after that, as San Francisco lost three games in a row. But they got back to their dominant ways after that, winning six in a row and cementing their status as the cream of the crop in the NFC.
Brock Purdy was a driving force behind that. Not only did he find success in the regular season, he helped the team earn a spot in the Super Bowl.
Alas, the 49ers fell short for the second time in four seasons against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Given his production to this point, it is safe to say Brock Purdy is in the top half of the league when it comes to quarterbacks.
However, in the opinion of NFL executives, coaches and scouts, he isn’t in the top 10. Over at ESPN , Jeremy Fowler released his quarterback rankings based on votes by personnel and Brock Purdy landed in the honorable mention portion of the piece.
“It’s hard to call him top 10 based on the guys ahead of him, but it’s hard to keep him out of the top 10, too,” an NFC executive said . “He willed that team to the Super Bowl. Only right to give him serious consideration.”
The numbers speak for themselves. He was fourth place in the MVP voting and sixth in the Offensive Player of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year voting.
However, as one executive put it, there are some limitations to his game. The pure talent that he possesses, in that person’s opinion, is what keeps him out of the top 10.
“He’s very good at navigating the pocket, buying time, using his legs — you’re not going to win because of him in most cases,” a separate NFC exec said . “He’s a really good system quarterback.”
When your system is 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, you will have a chance to shine. He may do wonderfully when it comes to game planning, but that plan still needs to be executed. To this point, Brock Purdy has done it excellently and deserves some praise.
