Georgia Bulldogs Offensive Lineman Retires From Football Due To Medical Condition

The Georgia Bulldogs are solidifying themselves as a college football juggernaut. They have dominated the college football world for the past few years. While they came up short last year, it was a close loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, which there is no shame in. Kirby Smart’s team is gearing up for another run in the new-look SEC. The program got bad news today when it was announced offensive lineman Kelton Smith Jr. would be retiring for medical reasons.

Georgia Bulldogs Kelton Smith Jr. Retires From Football

Kelton Smith Jr. is currently a redshirt freshman. He was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class out of Columbus, Georgia. He was one of five offensive linemen to sign with the team in the 2023 class. It is not clear what the medical condition is, but reports indicate that Smith Jr.’s family and team doctors have been monitoring the condition closely. The good news is Smith Jr. will continue his studies at the university and stay with the team in a different capacity.

“This is never an easy transition for a player, and we vow to stick with Kelton during this period and provide him the support he needs,” coach Kirby Smart said in a prepared statement. “It is tough losing a person of Kelton’s character, but we look forward to him staying a part of our program.”

Often, when this happens, a player loses the scholarship and is forced to move on from the school. It seems the school wants him to stay and complete his studies. This is a good move by the school, as coaches often talk about the importance of academics but don’t often back that up with actions.

    2024 Outlook

The Georgia Bulldogs will have their hands full this season. While every schedule in the SEC is tough, Georgia has an especially tough gauntlet. They start the season playing the Clemson Tigers on a neutral field. They will be favored, but it will still be a tough game. Then, in SEC play, they have road games against Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss. Those games would be tough at home, but they are brutal on the road.

Still, the Georgia Bulldogs have the talent to make it happen. They are eager to get back into the College Football Playoff and win another national championship. We’ll have to keep an eye out for Kelton Smith Jr. on the sidelines and see what role the team puts him in.
