Pat McAfee Fiercely Roasts ESPN's Top 100 Athletes List

Since Pat McAfee signed a five-year, $185 million deal with ESPN last year, the relationship between the popular media personality and the network has been strained, with several disagreements and challenges impacting their collaboration.

McAfee, who became popular for his charismatic, off-color commentary about sports and everything else in between, can rub people the wrong way at times—even his employer. Like he may do with popular players and teams in the sporting world, McAfee has no problem critiquing ESPN.

After taking a two-week hiatus from his podcast, which simultaneously runs on ESPN, McAfee returned with The Pat McAfee Show this week. On Tuesday's episode, the former NFL punter let it be known his thoughts on ESPN's latest top 100 athletes of the century list .

“Now, there is a top-100 list that’s coming out from ESPN people, and I’ll tell you what, it is the epitome of everything that everybody hates about ESPN,” McAfee said. “What they chose to do in ranking the top 100 athletes from the 21st century, they only gave us 50 to 100 yesterday; what a s---show. What an absolutely terrible list.”

ESPN delivered 51-100 on Tuesday. Here was their criteria for making their selections:

"Accounting only for athletic accomplishments since January 1, 2000, we utilized a panel of experts and ESPN’s renowned Stats & Information Group to rank the top 100 athletes across all sports. More than 75,000 votes were cast by ESPN’s reporters, analysts, producers, editors, and experts around the globe to whittle the initial list of 400 athletes to 100."

    ESPN's First Take

With any sort of list that ranks the greatest of anything, there is bound to be endless criticism and debate pouring out from fans, especially in the social media age.

McAfee, however, has a massive platform to voice his opinions, albeit on the network that made the list. The relationship between McAfee and ESPN continues to be intriguing.
