A woman has filed a class action lawsuit after a Valencia chiropractic office employee found a hidden camera secretly recording in the bathroom earlier this year.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Melanie Mora in Los Angeles Superior Court last week, names Fenton Chiropractic Corp. of America, the Joint Chiropractic Management Co. and chiropractor Nicholas Vanderhyde as defendants. Promenade LLC, the owner of the strip mall on McBean and Magic Mountain Parkways in Valencia, is also named.

On May 8, an employee of The Joint Chiropractic discovered at least one camera connected to a power bank taped inside a cabinet directly across from the toilet, KTLA reported.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station later arrested Vanderhyde, 40, on June 4 on a felony count of possession of obscene matter depicting a minor and a misdemeanor count of photographing a person in a room, according to law enforcement officials at the time .

According to the suit, the hidden camera or cameras “recorded anytime motion was detected in the bathrooms. The hidden cameras recorded videos of women and men using the facilities, invading their privacy and capturing intimate moments without their consent.”

Mora’s proposed class action lawsuit alleges several complaints, including invasion of privacy, unlawful recording of confidential information and negligence.

The suit alleges that the defendants in the case also violated patients’ rights by allowing medical or non-medical personnel to view the recordings without making any effort to log or track who viewed the recordings.

The suit seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory damages for all patients recorded using the restrooms at The Joint Chiropractic in the last one to four years.

Ed. Note: The class action filing incorrectly states that the camera was discovered in May 2023. The camera was discovered in May 2024.
