WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — A group of Sheriff’s Deputies in Beaufort County are finishing up training this summer.

The office is staffing school resources officers this year for all county schools. They just finished up a 40-hour block for the School Resource Officer Certification Program. During that training, in school security and safety as well as ethics and leadership.

The Beaufort County School System has contracted school resource officers through a private company for the past few years. This year, the Sheriff’s Office and Board of Education agreed to bring deputies back into the school. Now, with just a little more than a month left of summer break, these deputies are training and ready to start serving students and teachers in the county.

“It’s important to us that our students have a safe environment so that they can come to the schools and learn and not have to worry about someone bullying them or someone calls in an issue with the school’s security. I just want the parents to know that we’re providing a professional law enforcement officer to these schools to serve as not only a protector, but a mentor and an educator,” said Captain Gary Brown, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Beaufort County Schools say they’re excited for the partnership once again with the Sheriff’s Office.
