GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–Residents in remote areas of Georgetown County could soon see a new, less expensive, more environmentally friendly source of energy as leaders are considering building a solar farm in Lamberttown.

The new solar farm project is estimated to cost over 200 million dollars. The site will take up 1,003 acres, and 400 acres will be filled with panels. The plan will consist of three phases. The first phase is underway adjacent to the proposed site.

Developers said solar panels would cut costs, make the energy grid more resilient, especially in severe weather, and provide cleaner energy.

“This renewable, clean, safe energy we produce won’t go directly to the homes and Lambertown. It will go onto the grid, which will help the utilities in the area. Stabilize their grid as far as being able to make sure there is enough power for hurricanes, blackouts, and other things that might happen,” said Gina Brown, the Senior Director of Economic and Community Development for Silicon Ranch.

The project has received some pushback from residents who raised concerns about the potential impact on wildlife in the area. Still, developers said the plans include initiatives to improve the environment. Developers are inviting residents to have an open discussion to ease their concerns.

“We are not going to get to any sort of understanding about the truth or facts unless we have the conversations, and we welcome people voicing not just their thoughts, but their opinion,” said Brown.

A public input meeting will be held at the old courthouse on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
