PITTSBURG, KS – Head coach Jenny Fuller and Pitt State softball would put on a camp for future Gorillas on Tuesday morning.

5th-7th graders would have the chance to work with players on Fuller’s squad, as well as practice in hitting and fielding drills. Gorillas head softball coach Jenny Fuller said in working with the older groups, the drills were more complex, but the message remained the same.

“Today we were able to do more intense drills just because this group is a little more skilled,” said Fuller.

“It’s still about making it fun and letting them be around our players, which is ultimately what they want to do.”

Kadyn Trochim, a redshirt senior infielder on Fuller’s squad, said the relationships players build with athletes is super important.

“It’s a relationship that will last a lifetime,” said Trochim.

“They’ll come to you if they need help with lessons or anything. It’s been a lot of fun to get to learn who some of these kids are.”

Heather Arnett, a junior utility player for the Gorillas, would echo Trochim in saying the bonds being built with young athletes is super important.

“It’s a core memory. I think just being there for my sister and getting to show her what it’s like and inspiring these kids is really special,” said Arnett.

“It’s just so much fun to be around all of these kids.”

The camp would see a significant increase in participants with comparison to previous years. Despite emphasis on fundamentals and drills, the girls were able to beat the heat with some fun games towards the end of the camp. Part of the post-camp activities included taking part in a water slide challenge, as all events would wrap up around 1 p.m.
