    Need backpacks, supplies, haircuts before school? Here's where you can get them in Brevard

    Is your kid in need of a backpack, haircut or other supplies before they head back to class at the start of August? Are you looking for a fun activity before summer comes to an end?

    There are numerous back-to-school events being held around the Space Coast from now up until the weekend before Monday, Aug. 12, the first day of school for Brevard students. Some offer free resources, while others are simply a chance to relax with your children before the school year starts.

    Get school supplies, free haircuts, vision screenings and more

    Saturday, July 20

    • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Clearlake Education Center: The Supply Zone is providing free backpacks and school supplies, as well as books, hygiene products, eye screenings, dental kits, diabetes tests and other necessities for the first 2,500 students to attend. Kids must be enrolled in BPS and part of the free or reduced lunch program.
    • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walter Butler Community Center in Cocoa: There will be a backpack giveaway, community resources, food trucks, games, music and giveaways.
    • 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Neighbor Up Brevard in Melbourne: KidSight will provide children with free vision screening, backpacks and other school supplies.

    Saturday, July 27

    • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Andrew Pickett Law, PLLC on Palm Avenue in Titusville: The first 200 elementary school-age students will receive one backpack filled with school supplies. There will also be music, face painting, food trucks, a bounce house and more.
    • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Q's Crackin' Crab & Seafood Kitchen in Cocoa Beach: They'll have backpacks, face painting, music, fun and food specials.
    • 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Mako Millwork Inc. in Melbourne. Kids can pick up free backpacks and school supplies and enjoy hot dogs, drinks, face painting, a train ride, a bounce house, games and more.

    Saturday, Aug. 3

    • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at River Lanes Family Entertainment Center in Titusville. They're giving away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for K-12 grade students. Students must be present to receive a backpack.
    • 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Titus Landing. Miracle City Market and Kim Steel State Farm are working to collect school supplies and fill 500 backpacks. Bring supplies to donate or come with your kid to pick up a backpack. Students must be present to receive backpacks.
    • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Space Coast Field of Dreams in West Melbourne. There'll be free school supplies, sensory-friendly activities, local vendors, advocacy groups and learning opportunities for kids to better understand how to be inclusive of their peers.
    • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the main pavilion at Titusville Sand Point Park. They're offering free food, snow cones, backpacks and school supplies, haircuts and activities like a waterslide and bounce house. Kids must be present to receive backpacks.

    Sunday, Aug. 4

    • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Space Coast Harley-Davidson in Palm Bay. Free school supplies and activities like cookie decorating, as well as resources for families; the event is targeted toward families with autistic children and children with similar disabilities.

    Saturday, Aug. 10

    • 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Poor Billy's Barber Shop in Downtown Melbourne. Barbers will offer free basic haircuts and trims for longer hairstyles for students. They'll also give away school supplies.
    • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Melbourne Square Mall. The free event will showcase family-friendly services and resources, as well as afterschool and year-round programs. Offerings include activities such as a reptile petting zoo, balloon twister, an obstacle course, temporary tattoos and more.
    • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Eddie Lee Taylor Sr. Community Center. Kids can pick up free backpacks and schools supplies from the City of Melbourne Parks Recreation and Gold Department. Free haircuts, heart screenings, food, games and activities will be offered.
    • 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Boost Mobile on Babcock Street in Palm Bay. Get free backpacks; enjoy giveaways and raffles, pizza, cookies, popcorn, snow cones, music and special deals on certain phones.

    Celebrate the summer before school starts

    All of the following events are set for Aug. 10:

    • 2 p.m. at Chilly Spoons Frozen Yogurt Store in Melbourne: DIY bead bar. Students, parents and teachers are invited to make beaded bookmarks, custom keychains or pens.
    • 4 p.m. at Salty Sisters in Cocoa Beach: Bounce houses, a dance party for kids, games with prizes, face painting and more.
    • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brevard Zoo in Melbourne: Families are invited to celebrate World Lion Day with games and lion-themed activities. Brevard County Public Libraries will be in the zoo's parking lot, and if you show your public library card, you'll get a BOGO admission to the zoo.

    Where you can donate supplies

    Most drives will accept donations before or on the day of their event, even if they haven't specifically asked for them. You can also donate to additional drives, such as the ones below.

    • Launch Credit Union, partnered with Brevard Schools Foundation and Volusia County Schools, is hosting a back-to-school supply drive through the whole month of July. Donations can be dropped off at all Launch Credit Union locations.
    • West Melbourne Police Department and Palm Bay Police Department are holding their Cram-a-Cruiser competition on Saturday, July 20, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walmart on Palm Bay Road in West Melbourne. The two departments will compete to see who can fill their cruiser with school supplies first. Community members are invited to purchase supplies to help fill the cruisers.
    • The city of Cocoa and Cocoa Police Department will collect items for the annual back-to-school supply drive on Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walmart on Clearlake Road in Cocoa. Community members are invited to purchase supplies to contribute to the drive.
