When you think of grilling season, what food comes to mind? Steak? Hamburgers? Hot dogs? Those are the classics, but they’re not the only thing you can throw on the grill for delicious flavor.

Have you ever thought about grilling a pizza? You can also fire up the grill to make breakfast and dessert. This one might sound strange, but throw some fruit and lettuce on there! Grilling fruit carmelizes the sugar and makes it extra sweet. In some cases, you can pair the grilled fruit with ice cream and call it dessert.

So next time you fire up the grill, save a little room on the cooking grates and in your stomach for some grilled fruit.

Watch this video to see how easy it is to grill fruits and salad.

    Grilling tips

Before you put anything on the grill, make sure it’s preheated. Fruits and other greens don’t need to cook for long, so once the grill is hot, put them on there and stay close. They're ready to remove when they have a little color.

Opt for oils with a high smoke point, like grapeseed or avocado oil if you’re adding a pre-grilling drizzle of oil.

Next time you're cooking out, consider also grilling:

    • Romaine lettuce.
    • Watermelon.
    • Pineapple.
    • Peaches.
    • Figs.
    • Cantaloupe.
    • Avocado, onion, and tomato for a smoky guacamole.
    • Citrus for marinades, vinaigrettes, cocktails, and more.

When grilling lettuce and other hearty greens, keep the root end intact so it stays together on the grill. You can slice fruit into larger pieces so they don’t fall through the grate or put them on a skewer.
