The National Weather Service of Shreveport said on Monday, July 8, an EF-1 tornado touched down in Cass County, just outside Hughes Springs.

According to the survey report they conducted, they said, “this tornado likely touched down between CR 2993 and CR 2915 east of Hughes Springs. By the time it crossed CR 2993, it was already doing EF-1 damage, uprooting trees and snapping a wooden power pole close to the base. The tornado continued to the NW, doing damage in wooded areas south of CR 2911. After the tornado did additional damage going across CR 2910, it took a more western course, following Highway 11 on its southern edge. Here, the width of the tornado is evident, as trees on the north side of the highway are snapped and uprooted towards the south and east. Damage can be seen all the way to the Highway 49 intersection, where it becomes more isolated, ending with mostly small and large limbs near the highway.”

Bowie-Cass Electric Cooperative had linemen out all last week, working on repairing downed power lines and getting electricity back to hundreds of homes. According to their outage map, they had over 3,400 meters out. Cass County saw 1,100 meters out, Bowie with 864, Morris with 362, and Titus County had 215 meters out. They report that all power had been restored to the counties by July 9th.
