TORONTO — Dale Coyne Racing will once again look to IndyCar’s developmental ladder to fill its open seat in the No. 18 car in light of Jack Harvey’s injury.

Hunter McElrea, who has been racing sports cars in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Series for the most part this year, has gotten the call from Coyne to fill in for Harvey in the 18-car for IndyCar’s next race in Toronto.

“It’s a dream come true for me to be making my NTT IndyCar Series debut,” McElrea said. “I’ve been working toward this for a long time, and I have to thank Dale (Coyne) for the opportunity. I can’t wait to get to Toronto, which is one of the coolest events of the year. I want to thank JR Smart and Courtesy Corporation for making this possible for me.”

McElrea, who claims New Zealand citizenship though he was born in Los Angeles, cut his teeth in IndyCar’s developmental series’ having finished second in the Indy NXT Series in 2023 driving for Andretti Autosport.

Before making his debut in the IndyCar ladder in the USF 2000 Series in 2019, McElrea made a name for himself racing the Australian Formula Ford Series where he won a series championship.

During this season he has been in the back pocket of Dale Coyne in case he might be needed.

“Hunter impressed the team during our test last week at Mid-Ohio,” Coyne said. “He quickly got up to speed and helped run through our testing plan. I’m excited to see what he can do on the streets of Toronto this weekend.”

McElrea is the latest driver of many to pilot the 18-car this season for Coyne, a list that includes Nolan Siegel, Jack Harvey, and Conor Daly.
