SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police is investigating a crash that happened on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County on Sunday where a car hit a 45-year-old man.

At 3:02 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, a car was traveling north on I-81 near Mount Jackson when it ran off the right side of the roadway and hit a guardrail.

Police said this prompted the driver — 45-year-old Harry L. Martin — to exit the vehicle and run into the northbound travel lane, where he was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Martin suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to the hospital for treatment.

The crash then caused a second tractor-trailer to collide with the initial tractor-trailer as both attempted to avoid hitting one another. Neither tractor-trailer driver was injured in the crash.

    The crash remains under investigation.
