MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Families in Montgomery County are continuing to raise concerns after the school board cut the virtual academy program from the budget.

On June 11, the Board of Education decided to not include funding for the Montgomery Virtual Academy ( MVA ) in the 2024-2025 school budget, forcing the academy to shut down.

This comes after a budget was approved for less than $30 million of what the board requested.

As a result, programs including the MVA are no longer being offered in the school district.

On Tuesday families and students gathered outside Rockville High School to fight for the reinstatement of the program.

“A need of the parents and the needs of the students doesn’t go away. So even if there is no budget or there is no MVA, what are the parents supposed to do? They didn’t get us any options. So with no options, it’s not like the issues goes away,” said Leah Meadows, at the protest.

Parents said there is no progress to refund the program.
