Kentucky and South Korea sign reciprocity agreement on drivers licenses

Kentucky and South Korean officials have signed a reciprocal driving agreement for citizens when they are abroad.

The move is an effort to expand job growth in the commonwealth. The Memorandum of Understanding is between South Korea’s National Police Agency and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Driver Licensing.

During a press conference last week, Governor Beshear previewed this agreement as part of his economic trip to Asia. He said this agreement is important for both governments.

“It's similar to what we did with Japan after the Toyota announcement. What that does, is allow Korean executives and others that are relocating in the United States to drive in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and if you want to go over to Seoul, for Kentuckians to be able to do the same in Korea.”

Governor Beshear said this step is necessary as more Korean companies are investing in Kentucky.

While not creating any legally binding obligations under international law, the agreement commits both governments to cooperate within their respective legal frameworks, to ensure a seamless exchange of driver’s licenses.
