Uppermost Highway 108 in Tuolumne County closes after rental truck gets stuck, CHP reports

Highway 108 was closed near its Sierra Nevada crest Wednesday when a rental truck got stuck, the California Highway Patrol reported.

It happened at about 5 a.m. about a mile east of Kennedy Meadows, part of a long stretch of steep, winding road, the CHP’s online log said.

The call involved a 26-foot-long U-Haul truck towing a 17-foot-long trailer, the CHP said. No injuries were reported, but both lanes were blocked. Two tow trucks were dispatched from the Sonora area.

Kennedy Meadows is a popular tourist spot on the west side of the 9,623-foot summit, known as Sonora Pass. The highway runs from Modesto to Highway 395 north of Bridgeport, Mono County.

The pass is open to trucks and recreational vehicles, but the CHP urges caution due to the grade and curves. It is closed by snow from late autumn to midspring each year.

In June 2020, two San Jose men were killed while traveling through the pass in a box truck loaded with household goods. It crashed in the Deadman Creek area, at about 9,000 feet.
