A professional boxer who was allegedly under the influence of fentanyl when he was involved in a grisly head-on crash that left a New Jersey woman dead is facing new charges in the case.
Robert Gunn, also known as “The Celtic Warrior,” was driving through Salem County on Sept. 28, 2019 when the deadly incident occurred, NJ.com reported. Police said his vehicle drifted across Upper Pittsgrove Township road and into oncoming traffic, then slammed into a car driven by 57-year-old Polly Tornari. She was pronounced dead on the scene while her husband was seriously injured.
Gunn’s blood tested positive for morphine while his urine tested positive for for other opiates, police said.
A Salem County grand jury originally indicted Gunn in February 2021 on charges of death by auto and assault by auto. He was again indicted this month on additional counts of fourth-degree aggravated assault by auto, and second- and third-degree counts of knowing violation or failure to perform duty imposed by law intended to protect public safety.
“The charges were added to ensure the court and future jurors have the most clear and organized case before them,” Salem County Executive Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey Barile told NJ.com . “The superseding indictment addresses issues raised during court filings as the trial date approached and lays out the facts and violations of law in the most clear and comprehensive way.”
The case, which was set to go to trial next month before the new indictment was announced, has been plagued with delays. Prosecutors have placed the blame on Gunn, who has changed attorneys several times over the years. He’s also missed a handful of court dates , which he has blamed on medical emergencies.
