NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Flood Watches are in effect as unsettled weather will expand, not only in the form of some rain, but also, cooler mornings, as The East Canyon Winds picked up earlier. Despite morning showers that dissipated, slow-moving storms are forming around from The Cerro Pelado and Hermits Peak / Calf Canyon burn scars with a swath of faster-moving storms in a few hours that will roar on through from the northeastern mountains into the eastern parts of The Rio Grande Valley as the leftover rain activity will make its way into The Pecos River Valley later this evening. Wetter weather ahead will be because of the clockwise-rotating high pressure system pivoting the more-abundant tropical moisture across New Mexico with lower high temperatures as a result.

Temperatures are rising rapidly once again, but many in the northeastern-sloped mountains, as well as even the valleys, were starting off in the upper 40’s and 50’s. 30-40+ mile-per-hour wind gusts were funneling through some of these canyons, including as far west as The Sandias as despite the increase in low-level moisture, temperatures were taking a longer time to drop for the 3/4ths southwestern part of our viewing area with temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s.

The clashing of relatively hot and dry air in southwestern areas to muggier air inbound from the northeast will lead to more thunderstorms later today. A few storms, especially in the northeastern plains, have the capability of producing large hail and frequent lightning, in addition to the wind-driven pockets of heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Monsoonal afternoon storms will linger in and around the communities of The Four Corners, as well as The Gila National Forest, before drifting off to west a bit before dissipating overnight. Before the rainier activity, temperatures will reach the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and near 100 degrees from north to south.

Rounds of storms are expected ahead as the weakening high pressure drifts off to the west-southwest, allowing for even more tropical moisture in the atmosphere to also dampen high temperatures because of the increase in cloud cover.
