Missy Elliot Becomes First Hip-Hop Artist To Have Song Sent To Space

Missy Elliott is making waves in space.

On Monday (July 15), NASA announced that Elliot's hit “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" was transmitted to planet Venus.

The transmission marked the first time a hip-hop song was sent to space by the agency.

"YOOO this is crazy! We just went #OutOfThisWorld with @NASA and sent the FIRST hip hop song into space through the Deep Space Network," Elliot wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "My song 'The Rain' has officially been transmitted all the way to Venus, the planet that symbolizes strength, beauty and empowerment. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning 👽👽."

NASA transmitted the song to Venus through radio antennas near Barstow, California. The agency said it took roughly 14 minutes for Elliot's hit to travel 158 million miles to the planet of love.

"The Rain" is the second song to be transmitted by the agency. The Beatles' "Across the Universe" was sent to the North Star, Polaris in 2008.

In a statement about the recent transmission, NASA referenced Elliot's nods to the cosmos throughout her career. Her music video for her single "Sock It 2 Me" from her 1997 debut album took place in space, and Elliot's 2024 futuristic-themed tour is called "Out of This World."

“Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting,” Brittany Brown , a director in NASA’s communications office, said in a statement.
