The new law banning vegetation near homes was supposed to take effect last year. However, the agency in charge of writing the rules hadn’t finalized them yet. The State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection is expected to release more details on the rules by the end of this year.

A former firefighter told the San Francisco Chronicle that highly flammable plants, like eucalyptus and rosemary, are more likely to catch fire than homes surrounded by gravel.
