Hall of Famer offers ridiculous solution for Cowboys QB Dak Prescott's contract situation

Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Haley proposed a preposterous solution for the Dallas Cowboys' contract dilemma with quarterback Dak Prescott.

"Trade Dak," the five-time Super Bowl champion said Tuesday on FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams." "Just put him up for the trade. Guess what? Every team in the league would be after him. Every team in the league. Dak is a winner. Dak is a great person, a great leader. I know him. I go up there all the time."

Of course, a Prescott trade isn't feasible. The 30-year-old passer — entering the final year of a four-year, $160M deal — would have to waive his no-trade clause. That's probably not happening. Though he wants an extension, Prescott recently told Patrik Walker of the team website, "[Dallas] is where I want to be."

Spotrac estimates Prescott's market value is a four-year deal worth $53.1M annually, the second highest in the NFL. To further complicate matters, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge-rusher Micah Parsons are up for extensions in 2025 and 2026.

The Cowboys could franchise tag Lamb next offseason, but he plans to hold out of training camp if he doesn't receive a new deal, via Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News.

Per Kurt Daniels of the team website, if the Cowboys extend the stars, they would become the first team in league history to have three players average at least $30M annually. This would devour cap space, inhibiting Dallas' ability to field a strong roster.

"[Owner Jerry Jones'] bill came due, and he doesn't have the money to be able to [pay everyone]," Haley said. "And so he's going to have to find another way around the salary cap. ... He gambled a long time, and now time is up."

If Jones and Co. fail to find a solution, the team's core may unravel. Prescott entering free agency in 2025 would result in a colossal $40.46M cap hit.
