MARYLAND ( DC News Now ) — Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced Wednesday that $12.1 million in federal funding will be used to expand electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state.

This comes after the first round of conditional awards was announced to add the sites as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

Officials said this program will accelerate the deployment of publicly accessible stations creating 130 fast-charging ports at 23 sites in 15 counties.

“Clean energy is not just smart for the environment; it creates new jobs for Marylanders and strengthens our economy. Climate action is about more than avoiding disaster. It’s about growing opportunity, and we can – and we will – do both,” said Gov. Moore, in a release.

To bring the vision to life, the Maryland Department of Transportation is teaming up with ElectraStop, Francis Energy, Gridwealth EV, Tesla, Wawa, and more to start installing the charging stations.

Residents can expect to see the new additions at malls, gas stations, and conscience started located along the Alternative Fuel Corridor.

“Installing these new fast chargers along our highways provides the certainty that consumers need to transition to electric vehicles. As we continue to make progress in our clean energy transition, we are making the air we breathe cleaner and building a greener economy,” said Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Serena McIlwain, in a news release.

Officials said this is a critical step toward the state’s EV infrastructure plan to implement 41 total sites.

Once these stations are available, the state said Maryland will meet more than 50% of the federal build-out requirements for the corridors.
