Nash County Board of Education members plan to take action on an undisclosed matter they’re first scheduled to discuss behind closed doors.
A special called meeting is set for noon on Monday, Nash County Public Schools announced in a news release Wednesday afternoon. Members will meet via videoconference, and all public portions of the meeting will be livestreamed on a school district YouTube channel.
Board Chairwoman LaShawnda Washington will call the meeting to order and entertain a motion to adopt the agenda. The school board will then consider a motion to waive provision for remote participation and discuss unspecified business items, according to NCPS.
The seven-item agenda lists “Closed Session” as the fifth order of business, followed by “Action from Closed Session” and adjournment.
Public bodies can meet in closed session for any of 10 permitted purposes listed in North Carolina’s open meetings law , including privileged attorney-client communication, negotiating a property sale or employment contract, reviewing complaints against individual employees and formulating school violence emergency response plans and the school safety components of school improvement plans.
The agenda released Wednesday doesn’t specify a reason for the closed session. State law requires board members to cite one or more of the permitted purposes when making a closed-session motion. Public bodies must reconvene in open session in order to take action.
The school system says it’s committed to helping the public participate “in a way that resembles as closely as possible the normal processes for in-person public meetings.” Anyone who requires disability accommodations or may have trouble accessing the livestream is encouraged to contact Carrie Davis at 252-462-2511 or cbdavis@ncpschools.net before Monday to explore whether alternative arrangements can be made.
