Sofia Vergara made Emmys history for her role in Griselda .

The Colombian actress was the first Latina nominated for the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category at the 2024 Emmy Awards . She portrayed the real-life Colombian crime boss, Griselda Blanco, in the Netflix mini series, Griselda. This was Sofia's first dramatic role of her career, which she prepared very hard for, she expressed during her interviews. The recognition makes the Colombia-born native the first Latina, born in a Latin country, to be nominated for the category.

Anya Taylor-Joy won the category for The Queen’s Gambit in 2021. While she was born in Miami, she has an Argentine father.

This is not Sofia's first Emmy nomination. In fact, the actress has been nominated four times from 2010-2013 for her role as Gloria Pritchett in ABC's Modern Family in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category. The show aired for 11 season starting in 2009.

Sofia opened up on Good Morning America about what it was like to play this role, and said it was a pleasure and but also torture. She worked on this project for 15 years. For the Colombian actress, this was a hard role for her. There were a lot of firsts for her including acting in Spanish, wear prosthetics, acting in a drama and more. She admitted to not feeling comfortable at first because all she knew was Modern Family.

Her role as Griselda made the Colombian crime boss' family feel some type of way that they sued Sofia for her betrayal. According to TMZ, Griselda's children, who represent her estate, claim that Sofia's portrayal of their mother is "unauthorized". They sued both Sofia and Netflix for using Griselda's image and likeness in the series.

According to court documents obtained by the outlet, real-life Griselda's kids tried to "prevent the release" of Sofia's new show, allegedly asking for an injunction to block the series. The show premiered on January 25.

Before her death in 2012, Griselda was linked to around 250 murders, with some estimates suggesting up to 2,000 deaths could be attributed to her. She was found guilty of drugs charges in 1985 and sent to prison for 15 years. She spent 10 years in prison and was sent back to Colombia after she got out after pleading guilty in 1998. Griselda was killed outside a butcher shop in 2012 at 69 years old.
