Poll results show how cool Ross County keeps houses

CHILLICOTHE — Earlier this month we asked readers what temperature they set their thermostat at inside their house to combat the summer heat. Now it is time to find out the results.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration around 94% of Ohio households use air conditioning equipment which is more than the 89% of households nationwide. Since June Ross County has experienced several days with over 90℉ heat and nights getting cooler than 50℉ according to the National Weather Service.

A recent poll of Gazette readers showed that the majority of readers, 40.35%, kept their house between 74℉ and 77℉ recently. Very few voters kept their house above 80℉ or below 65℉.

Mitch Higgins from Accurate Heating, Cooling & Plumbing gave some tips for those wanting to stay cool:

    • Close the blinds with curtains or blinds.
      • By blocking sunlight from entering the house you are keeping heat away as well.
    • Pay attention to humidity.
      • Opening the windows on a cool night might sound like a good idea but you may also be letting in extra humidity which will cause your unit to work harder when it is turned back on.
    • Make sure your unit is clean.
      • There are many ways to do this including checking your filter or having a technician come to make sure the coils are clean and levels are where they need to be.
