Police say they shot a 24-year-old Bronx man in the arm Wednesday night after he refused to drop a weapon, but the man was not critically injured.

Officers were called to 2385 3rd Avenue in Mott Haven around 10:15 p.m. to address a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend, officials said.

When they arrived, they found the man holding a large machete, and gave multiple commands for him to drop the weapon, according to police. When he refused, the officers tried to subdue him with a taser, but that didn’t work. One of the officers then shot the man in the left arm, according the the NYPD.

Police said they immediately rendered aid and applied a tourniquet to the man’s arm. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition, and the machete was recovered at the scene.

The officers were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and the NYPD’s force investigations division is looking into the incident.

The injured man was not immediately identified, but residents of the modern high-rise apartment building said the shooting unfolded in an apartment on the sixth floor.

“I was going outside to throw garbage out, and I heard a lot of noise on the staircase,” said Kathlyn Baldonado, who lives on the seventh floor. “I couldn’t really distinguish what they were saying ... I was a bit scared, I was thinking that maybe it was a rogue shooter.”

Other neighbors said they generally felt safe in the building and voiced astonishment at the news.

“I feel like the doormen in front do a pretty good job of making sure they know people who come in, and they talk to all the guests. So I’m just still baffled that something like that could happen,” said Charles McCullum.

“I’m just glad that they didn’t use deadly force, and that he’s able to wake up and see another day,” said resident Sean Pedroso.

This is a developing story and has been updated.
