The Padres selected Ornelas' contract and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Ornelas has spent the entire 2024 season at El Paso, slashing .316/.390/.515 with 12 home runs and five stolen bases across 310 plate appearances. Though he'll remain with El Paso coming out of the All-Star break, the 24-year-old outfielder is now a part of the Padres' 40-man roster. The transaction should improve his chances of receiving his first big-league call-up at some point later this season.

Triple-A Buffalo reinstated Votto (ankle) from its 7-day injured list ahead of Friday's game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Votto had participated in 16 rehab contests between Single-A Dunedin and the rookie-level Florida Complex League, going 8-for-43 with one home run and a 14:8 K:BB in 53 plate appearances. He seems to be feeling fine physically at this point, but Toronto would surely like to see better results from Votto at Triple-A before it considers adding him to the major-league roster.

Maxwell has a 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a 17:3 K:BB in 10.2 innings over his last 10 appearances for Triple-A Louisville. One of the best relief-pitching prospect in the minors, Maxwell came into the year with significant control issues, and that has still been an issue (16.7 percent walk rate on the year). He struggled initially after getting promoted from Double-A Chattanooga on May 21, but this recent stretch could make him an option for the big-league club in the second half.

The Chargers placed Young (neck) on the active/PUP list Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. Young has said he intends to be ready for the start of training camp, but for now it appears that he's still working through the recovery process following his offseason neck surgery. He can come off the PUP list at any point during training camp or the preseason, once cleared to practice, and there are still just over three weeks until New Orleans' preseason opener at Arizona. The 2020 first-round pick could emerge as a key part of the Saints' pass-rush corps for the 2024 season, health permitting.

The Twins activated Weiss (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday and outrighted him to Triple-A St. Paul, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Weiss has been out all season with a teres major strain in his right shoulder. He's healthy now, after having allowed six runs with an 8:3 K:BB over eight innings during his rehab assignment, which included stops at three affiliates. The Twins didn't have room on Weiss from the 40-man roster, but he'll remain in the organization as bullpen depth at St. Paul.

Palencia was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday for the second game of a doubleheader versus the Cardinals. However, the 24-year-old didn't make an appearance in his brief stint with the big club and will now head back to Triple-A.

Kansas City placed Thompson (undisclosed) on the active/non-football injury list Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Thompson being placed on the NFI list to begin training camp isn't surprising, as he suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest during a team meeting back in June. Kansas City will doubtless take every precaution with Thompson's recovery as he works his way back onto the practice field. He'll be eligible to return from the NFI list at any point during training camp or the preseason, once cleared to practice.

Chiefs' BJ Thompson: Shifts to NFI list

The Royals recalled Waters from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. With MJ Melendez (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday, Waters will return to Kansas City to give the Royals additional outfield depth coming out of the All-Star break. The 25-year-old went 1-for-8 during his first MLB stint in June, and he's slashed .277/.362/.502 with 44 RBI across 287 plate appearances with Omaha.
