Meeting sets SLO County fair plans

Monday night Larry Lewin, manager of the County Fair, met with the gymkhana committee and outlined the program and events which will be announced within the next few days.

At the meeting the committee restored the calf scramble that had been discontinued by the Junior Gymkhana because of many requests received by the fair committee for the event. Two calves have been donated so far as prizes by the San Luis Obispo County Cattleman’s Association and a number of other are expected.

According to Lewin, the heavy load of applications received for entries in the swine division may force the fair committee to close this division by the end of the week. Not far behind the swine division, the dairy cattle division is closing fast.

Gordon Davis is completing last minute details of the rodeo and plans indicate that the affair will be as big or bigger than any ever held at the fair. The names of contestants will be announced shortly on confirmation of entries by top riders.

Lewin will leave for San Francisco Tuesday evening to select the trophies for the junior and senior gymkhana awards and will return to Paso Robles late Wednesday.

Monterey County agrees to build Nacimiento roads asked by SLO

City Attorney James Madded informed the city council Monday night that he has been notified that the Monterey County Water District has agreed in writing to construct Nacimiento Dam access roads requested by San Luis Obispo County and has given them top priority.

Such action was requested by San Luis Obispo County as a condition to be met before supervisors could consider a Monterey County petition for condemnation of acreage on the Godfrey Ranch, owned by the DeVries and Triguera families for recreation purposes.

Madden said attorneys Albert Monaco and Joe Stave and J. Redding chairman of the Monterey County Water District, will meet with the council to explain in detail their plans for administration of the additional recreation area.

The council instructed Madden to obtain copies of the enabling act of 1947 in connection with Nacimiento and the new bill presented in March of this year in connection with condemnation of the additional recreation land, to see just what is covered by the measures.

Reading of the minutes of the July 12 meeting of the Recreation Commission revealed that 5441 persons visited the swimming pool during the month of June.

In other action the council agreed to an amendment to the lease of the new post office, approved utility agreements with the Division of Highways for lowering water lines under the freeway which will bypass the city at state expense, amounting to $1500; approved a right-of-way contract with the division for a sewer main easement at 32nd street; and approved a request by the City Housing Authority for cancellation of $6756 of in lieu taxes.
