A series of downbursts caused damage during the storms on Tuesday evening in York County , and some residents and businesses remain without power on Thursday morning.

The York County Emergency Management Agency posted a statement that the National Weather Service issued about the storms, which toppled trees and power lines and even spun a Central York High School football goal post 45- to 90 degrees.

"In coordination with the York County Office of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service in State College has confirmed that a series of downbursts occurred on the northeast side of York during the evening of July 16, 2024," the statement says. "Maximum estimated wind speeds were between 80 and 90 mph."

The first severe downburst happened at Central York High School around 6:57 p.m., the statement says.

A large portion of Springettsbury and Hellam townships sustained damage, and it extended south of Route 30 between Hallam and East Prospect boroughs, the statement says. Structural damage was reported.

Some individuals have speculated on social media that the damage might have been caused by a tornado, but National Weather Service meteorologist David Martin said it was not.
