Aaron Rodgers favorite 'not officially retired' as broadcast career begins

Randall Cobb is set to begin his broadcast career - but the free agent receiver made it clear he is ‘not officially retired’ just yet.

Cobb served as one of Aaron Rodgers ’ favored targets with the Green Bay Packers . He then signed with the New York Jets ahead of the 2023 season, linking back up with the quarterback before the campaign unraveled.

The former Pro Bowler appears to be stepping back from the sport after 13 seasons in the NFL with the Packers, Dallas Cowboys , Houston Texans , and Jets. Cobb is joining the SEC Network as a studio analyst, although he is leaving the door open for a return to the field.

“I am incredibly excited to be coming home to the SEC with this new role,” Cobb said in a press release. “The level of greatness this conference provides year after year is unmatched - I cannot wait to return to the conference family with this SEC Network crew.”

While Cobb is still open to playing in the NFL if the right opportunity comes, he is ready to begin the next chapter. On social media when the news broke, Cobb posted: “Not officially retired but I’m excited for this new opportunity! Catch me and @AlyssaLang on Out of Pocket Wednesdays on the SEC Network!”

Cobb starred as a college quarterback before switching to receiver at the University of Kentucky. He ended his collegiate career with 122 pass attempts, 228 rushing attempts, and 144 receptions along with 40 total touchdowns across three seasons.

Cobb, who was recently inducted into the Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame, was drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft . He emerged as one of the NFL's premier slot men and Rodgers’ top target for a few years.

The 33-year-old’s 2014 season, in which he tallied 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns from 91 catches, was his lone Pro Bowl selection. He potentially ends his career with 630 catches for 7,624 yards and 54 scores, with most of that production coming across his 10 seasons in Green Bay.

After the Jets completed a sensational trade with the Packers to acquire Rodgers last offseason, several offensive players made the switch to join him in New York. The Jets ensured the four-time MVP had familiar faces to throw to, with former Packers receivers Allen Lazard and Cobb both heading to the Big Apple.

But with Rodgers going down with a torn Achilles just four snaps into his Jets career, Cobb - and the Jets offense - struggled immensely. The veteran snagged just five catches from 17 targets for 39 yards and a touchdown.
