The Oilers are in a holding pattern with Philip Broberg. Does anybody have balls enough to send in an offer sheet for him? (Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports)

Someone Should Put In An Offer Sheet For Philip Broberg

The Oilers have had a great offseason. Even Connor McDavid thinks so . The problem is the Oilers have negative cap space right now and are totally screwed if someone puts in an offer sheet for Philip Broberg. A player who Edmonton should be eager to keep for the long haul after a successful stint in the playoffs this past go around.

Broberg , 23, was a +8 in 10 playoff games while also notching two goals and an assist in 15:48 minutes of ice time. The raw stats don’t tell the full story. You don’t need stats to see the former eighth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft has talent and looks like a top 4 D man in the league. Someone that Edmonton has probably hidden in the minors too long in all honesty.

As of right now, the Oilers have no path to sign him. It’s part of what made the Ryan McLeod trade so insane for Buffalo, but that’s a different story for another day. Broberg is an RFA right now and is prime to be plucked with the right offer sheet. Edmonton is actually over the cap right now and needs to make a move before they even ice a roster on opening night.

If someone was smart, they would make Broberg an offer right now that Edmonton can’t match. Except… nobody will because of the “code” within the NHL. I get the point that Kelly McCrimmon and others have made about this very subject. I just think if teams were smart, they would be more ruthless about restricted free agents. I’m on record for saying the same thing about Jason Robertson, by the way. How did that one turn out? Wouldn’t it have been smarter for someone to bid up on Robertson and take him for themselves?

Look at how easy this would be. A $4 million AAV for Broberg would only cost you a second round pick ( link to RFA guide by Sporting News ). Something a lot of teams could actually pull off. Why not send the offer sheet in?

Revisiting The Mattias Ekholm Trade To Edmonton

It’s certainly something to think about. We saw how big of a difference it was having Broberg pair with Darnell Nurse instead of Cody Ceci, who remains totally unplayable . If I were a GM in the league, this Broberg situation is absolutely something rival teams should be trying to stick their nose in.
