Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons awarded the Medal of Courage Thursday to the K-9 who leapt over the Escambia River Bridge trying to catch a drive-by shooting suspect in June.

ECSO K-9 Streeter, named after Cpl. Eric Streeter who died in the line of duty in 1984, was presented the medal for his bravery and courageous actions while chasing a fleeing suspect. K-9 Streeter suffered minor injuries from the jump from the bridge.

"Today, we are here to acknowledge the courage of one of our members," Simmons said during the event. "We're here today to award the Medal of Courage to one of those members − K-9 Streeter − who is joined here today with his partner (Deputy) Kevin Stimmel.

"K-9 Streeter, during the course of his duties, followed one of the suspects onto the bridge, and, refusing to give up, followed that suspect, eagerly jumping off the bridge without hesitation," Simmons added. "Streeter did his job."

After the bridge jump, Streeter spent the night at Davis Animal Hospital Emergency Center for observation of his superficial injuries. After a few days on "desk duty," Simmons said the K-9 was able to return to his normal duties.

    What happened on June 24?

Escambia County Sheriff's deputies were notified by the Real Time Crime Center that a stolen vehicle had been spotted, so patrol deputies made their way to Erress Boulevard in Brent. Before deputies arrived, ShotSpotter notified the RTCC of 40 shots being fired on the same road as the vehicle, some of which struck a 70-year-old woman.

Deputies found the vehicle and began the pursuit, and the chase ran from Massachusetts Avenue to Fairfield Drive to Interstate 10, Simmons told the media during a press conference following the incident. The car exited on Scenic Highway traveling toward Pace and the chase ended with a deputy performing a PIT maneuver on the fleeing vehicle on the Escambia River Bridge.

After the PIT maneuver, video shows the three suspects immediately exit the vehicle and jump off the bridge.

Simmons reported that one of the men, later identified as Trevion Moton, missed the water during the jump and died from injuries related to the fall.

Jaquaris Ethridge, who was recently indicted for murder, was arrested after his jump. Terrance Gross, the third suspect who K-9 Streeter chased over the bridge, eluded search parties for roughly three days until law enforcement in Laredo, Texas, found the 19-year-old on his way to Mexico, according to the ECSO.

Shooting victim, Myra Hayes, dies from injuries

Following the volley of 40 shots on June 24, Hayes was transported to a local hospital in critical condition after being shot in the neck.

Hayes later died in the hospital a few weeks later.

Sheriff Chip Simmons believes the shooting was retaliation

During the sheriff's press conference, Simmons said he believes the shooting was in retaliation to the drive-by shooting that killed 22-year-old Terrell Owens on June 20.

Pensacola Police told the News Journal that Owens died at the corner of Gonzalez and M streets and that investigators were looking for a white SUV with potentially up to three suspects.
