After being delayed several times because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Morbius was released in United States theaters in April 2022. Starring Jared Leto , the Sony Spider-Man Universe film received largely negative reviews from both fans and critics.
It still managed to make approximately $167.5 million at the global box office; however, Sony’s attempt to re-release the movie in June 2022 after the movie became the subject of numerous internet memes only brought in an extra $300,000.
What did Daniel Espinosa say about Morbius?
Speaking with Deadline , Espinosa opened up about his experience making Morbius.
“To make a movie through committee, I think, is very hard, and I felt in the end that maybe a different director would have been a better fit,” he said. “I’m known amongst the studios to be a person with a lot of opinions, and maybe they were not looking for that kind of director.”
Along with Morbius, Espinosa made 2010’s Easy Money, 2012’s Afe House, 2015’s Child 44, and 2017’s Life. His next movie, Madame Luna, recently screened at the Taormina Film Festival, while he also directed an eight-part suspense drama series for Netflix titled The Helicopter Heist, which will be released later this year.
Along with Leto, Morbius stars Matt Smith as Lucien/Milo Morbius, Adria Arjona as Dr. Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris as Dr. Emil Nicholas, Al Madrigal as Al Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud.
Sony has not announced any formal plans regarding whether or not Leto will ever reprise his role as Michael Morbius. The next entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will be Venom: The Last Dance, which releases on October 25, followed by Kraven the Hunter on December 13.
