MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Thursday marked 50 years that WIC has been serving women, infants and children throughout the state of West Virginia.

WIC first started in January of 1974 in Pineville Kentucky as a way to improve nutrition in women and children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. WIC offers many services including monthly food packages to moms, babies and children up to the age of five as well as nutrition education and breast-feeding education.

“Nutrition education component is huge. That’s so important for anyone in life wherever they are, that good nutrition is key to your health and the breastfeeding education is so important as well. A lot of first-time moms aren’t sure how maybe to latch or position baby and we work one on one with them and we’re here to support them throughout that breastfeeding journey,” Monongalia County WIC Program Manager Cami Haught said.

WIC held a 50th Birthday celebration for its Monongalia County location in June and will be holding another birthday celebration on Aug. 2 at the Harrison County WIC Office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone who wants to stop by to meet staff and learn more about WIC is welcome to do so. Birthday cake will be provided.
