The New Heights Athletic Complex played host to the Basketball Camp of Champions with 6th through 8th grade boys and girls from all over Southwest Missouri participating.

Retired head coach and Missouri Basketball Hall of Famer Skip Brock led the camp with help from other coaches around the area. While teaching fundamentals was an area of focus, Brock believes it is important to grow the game of basketball and give back to his community.

“I’ve been a basketball coach over 40 years and worked 40 years of camp. Camp is just one of those things I always look forward to,” Brock said. “My children were able to benefit from attending basketball camp so just want to pass it on and help make the game better in Southwest Missouri.”

The kids participating in the camp ran through several drills focusing on shooting form, defense, and even the more physical aspects of the game like setting screens and taking charges.

While fundamentals are a crucial aspect to any young hoopers’ development, kids like Nolan Stanton enjoyed the experience of competing in scrimmages against other top players from around the area.

“This camp is just great,” Stanton said. “I mean the best kids in the area are here it’s just great to learn new things and getting to play with really good competition.”

The camp got underway July 16 and ran through Thursday, July 18.
