Tiger Woods has won three Open Championships, and Royal Troon has hosted nine. Never, though, has Woods won an Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The 48-year-old golfing legend said before this week's event that "I'll play as long as I can play and I feel like I can still win the event," as he dismissed talk of potential retirement.

He made a strong start in his opening round Thursday in tricky windy conditions on the Scottish west coast, with a birdie on the par-three third, but a double bogey immediately followed as the 15-time major champion began to struggle.

Eventually, he reached the clubhouse on +8 after carding an opening round of 79 to leave him 15 strokes off the overnight lead. Making the cut is looking like a long shot.

The Sporting News is tracking live scores from Tiger Woods' second round at the Open Championship. Follow along below with the results and highlights as they happen.

Tiger Woods results, highlights from Round 2 at 2024 Open Championship

    (All times Eastern)

6:49 a.m. — Woods' approach just fades left, but it doesn't look a bad lie. A birdie might be beyond him here, but getting to the turn at +1 is no bad effort given yesterday's difficulties. But... oh no: a six-footer misses comfortably to the right, and it's a bogey.

6:36 a.m. — Difficult birdie putt here for Woods, up the slope on the short par-three eighth hole. The distance is just too much. He makes par, though, despite the ball circling the drain a little longer than felt comfortable. If he can get to the back nine at evens, he'll consider this a decent morning.

6:20 a.m. — The wind has picked up a little now. Woods doesn't quite judge it right as he sends an iron to the back of the seventh green, where the ball steadfastly refuses to roll back towards the pin. It's a beautiful putt down the slope, though, and he'll mark par.

6:04 a.m. — Woods finds the rough but follows up with a magnificent approach that lands 21 feet from the pin. He rolls it down the slope.. and in! Vintage Tiger. That's what this crowd came to see.

5:48 a.m. — Just as yesterday Woods finds the bunker on the par-three fifth, but it's a much better lie. He takes a face full of sand as he chips to the green, but this is a tricky putt for par. It's a lovely stroke, but the ball just won't go in.

5:23 a.m. — Another par as Woods smartly navigates the fourth. The score might suggest otherwise, but this has been a solid start to his second round.

5:04 a.m. — A lovely tee shot puts Woods 141 yards from the pin. The approach wasn't the best, but this putt is makeable. How he'd love to roll this one in... not quite. But it's another par, and he played that hole nicely.

4:51 a.m. — A difficult chip right through the gap between two bunkers flies long, and Woods can't rescue it with the first putt. It's a double bogey on the second, and he drops to 10 over as the rain falls a little harder.

4:35 a.m. — It's a par to start, a long putt with perfect length just avoiding the left of the hole.

4:25 a.m. — Tiger on the tee... and it's plumb on the fairway. Great start. Xander Schauffele finds almost exactly the same length; Patrick Cantlay is a little shorter. The wind seems to be much easier out there.

4:21 a.m. — There's a warm round of applause as Woods makes his way up the steps to the first tee.

4:10 a.m. — Woods has just been pictured out practicing ahead of this morning's start. He had a big smile on his face as he went through the motions with a wedge. It's a good sign.

3:51 a.m. — It was a tough watch for Tiger at times on Thursday, although the appalling moment that a British announcer speculated he was taking painkillers took many of the headlines. But the first groups this morning have enjoyed far more favorable conditions, and Tiger may well be relishing the chance to get back out there. He's due to tee off in a little over half an hour.

3:30 a.m. — Plenty of golfers, Woods and Rory McIlroy chief among them, struggled with the conditions yesterday. The weather's looking a little brighter today, though.

Will Tiger Woods make the cut?

The cut line is projected at +3 after Thursday's opening round , so it would take a remarkable performance on Friday for Woods to make it.

After reaching the turn at +11, he is almost certain not to be playing this weekend.

    Tiger Woods tee time today

Woods will tee off at 4:25 a.m. ET Friday, along with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
