Every driver knows that once a year, it’s time to update your car’s registration. But what about a trailer your vehicle is hauling?

According to Kansas law, all trailers that exceed 2,000 pounds need to be tagged and registered in the state of Kansas.

“Trailer with an operating weight of 2,000 pounds or less may be titled and registered at the owner’s option, [but] they are not required to be titled and registered,” the Kansas Department of Revenue’s website says.

“Operating weight” refers to both the weight of the trailer and any load added. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, all trailers on Kansas roads have to have all required lamps — including turn signals, brake lights and license plate lights.

Farm trailers are exempt from the registration law, unless they are carrying more than 6,000 pounds.

Trailers must renew their registration every January or February , according to Sedgwick County’s website, the cost of which varies by weight.

Do I have to register boat trailers in Kansas?

Additionally, boat trailers also have to be registered and tagged in Kansas for identifying when they’re on the roads.

According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, all “vessels powered by a motor (gasoline, diesel, or electric), or sail” have to be both registered and numbered.

There are multiple ways boat owners can register their boat — online, in person or by mail.

You can do so online through Go Outdoor Kansas’ website , or by sending off an application and registration fee to KDWP’s Pratt Office.

If you’re using a boat registered in a different state on Kansas waters, you can only use it for 60 days before you have to register it in Kansas, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks’ website.

Kansas does not title any watercraft or register/title motors, independent from a boat, KDWP says.

What to know about vehicle registrations

Every Kansas vehicle has to have an up-to-date tag or a 60-day temporary tag to be legally on the roads.

Tags must be renewed every year on a staggered basis based on the owner’s last name. The Kansas Highway Patrol says there is no grace period for driving with expired tags.

Here’s the schedule for renewing your vehicle registration , the letter stands for the initial of the owner’s last name:

    • February: A
    • March: B
    • April: C & D
    • May: E, F & G
    • June: H & I
    • July: J, K & L
    • August: M, N & O
    • September: P, Q & R
    • October: S
    • November: T, V & W
    • December: U, X, Y & Z
