New York's tornado count for July has set a new record, with 16 confirmed tornados touching down across the Empire State. The previous record - set in 1992 - was 13 tornados in the month of July, according to National Weather Service data.

David Thomas, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo, said that the number could still rise as survey teams are still evaluating damage that occurred this past week. Plus, he said, July is not yet over.

Of the confirmed tornados this month, the strongest twister was an EF-2 tornado that ravaged Rome, Oneida County, on Tuesday. That storm was one of six confirmed tornados in new York on Tuesday.

There were three more confirmed tornados on Monday, including an EF-O tornado that damaged Canandaigua and another EF-O that touched down in Pavilion, Genesee County.

Seven confirmed tornados were recorded across the state on July 10.

According to the Weather Service, New York typically averages two tornados in July and nine tornados a year, when considering data recorded over the last three decades. Tornado records date back to 1950.
