Fifteen-time major winner Tiger Woods did not have a very good start to his campaign at Royal Troon. Woods, who last won a major in 2019, finished the first round of the 2024 Open Championship on Thursday tied for 136th place with just a score of 8-over 79.

Perhaps there was a little bit of vindication that Colin Montgomerie felt following the conclusion of the tournament’s opening round. It can be recalled that the Scottish pro suggested that Woods should retire. Woods hit back at Montgomerie last Tuesday, but his work on Thursday did not do much to prove the European Ryder Cup great' point wrong.

    Even Woods admitted the obvious.

"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today," Wood said about his first round at the Open Championship (h/t Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post ).

"I had three 3-putts today. I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today.”

Woods had not seen plenty of action before flying to Europe. He had played in only nine rounds in the 2024 PGA Tour prior to the Open Championship and went just 1/4 in those starts.

Woods, a three-time Open champion, will need a strong second round if he is to keep playing into the weekend, as only the top 70 (and ties) will make the 36-hole cut.
