The LSV scholarship ceremony was held virtually last month.

Greetings were given by Leah S. Vines, director of the scholarship. The theme of the ceremony was, “The Infinite Possibility.”

Scripture reading was led by Vernon Vines, and Katie Staton gave the invocation.

This year, 16 recipients were awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

This brings the total to 77 scholarships awarded since 2016. The LSV Scholarship Fund Committee and all the recipients expressed gratitude to the donors for their continued support of the program. Committee officials said the organization is dedicated to helping students succeed personally and professionally as they explore the infinite possibilities of taking on the world.

The young men and women who were honored at the virtual event gave committee members a lasting hope for the future, organizers said. Committee members also gave due respect to the parents, teachers and school staff for their role in shaping the scholarship recipients.

Marsha Cooper gave the history, and Katie Staton presented the purpose.

The speaker for the event was Ernie Meyers, who was introduced by Travis C. Vines, vice president of the scholarship. Originally from Harlem in New York, Meyers used his desire to succeed on the basketball hardwood to become one of the elite prep players in the nation. He decided to come South to play for another New Yorker, the late Jim Valvano at N.C. State University.

Meyers was a member of the 1983 Wolfpack National Championship squad. After graduation, he played professional basketball. He currently resides in Raleigh and works as an analyst for ACC Network extra games and radio for the Wolfpack’s highly ranked women’s basketball team on Wolfpack’s Sports Network.

During the virtual ceremony, Meyers delivered a speech that touched on his experiences and successful career, giving key points of being successful. He concluded by reminding the scholarship recipients to listen to their parents and stay connected with the church of their faith.

The recipients are 2024 graduates of the following high schools: SouthWest Edgecombe High School, D.H. Connelly High School, Edgecombe Early College High School, Millbrook High School, J.H. Rose High School, West Cabarrus High School, James B. Hunt High School and South Garner High School.

Scholarship recipients said they plan to attend the following colleges or universities: the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, East Carolina University in Greenville, Elon University, N.C. Wesleyan University, N.C. State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Winston-Salem State University, Duke University, the University of Mount Olive and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The scholars and their parents expressed gratitude for the award.

The LSV Community Award of Integrity was posthumously awarded to the late Nofleet Suggs for his faithful and dedicated support and his notable impact on the Pinetops and Edgecombe County communities. The award was presented to his family at the Pinetops Town Hall last month.

Closing remarks of congratulations were given by Victor Vines, president of the scholarship.
